Lydia Knight on AI and the Neuroscience of Leadership

Recap from the newsletter of El Sailon founder, Curt Doty

Lydia Knight: Neuroscience, Story, and AI

Curt introduced Lydia Knight, a coach and founder of The She Center. Her talk wove personal narrative, neuroscience, and AI ethics into a cohesive and inspiring presentation.

🔥 Lydia’s Secret

Lydia shared an intensely personal story: she was raised in a cult led by her grandmother that believed in Satanic conspiracies involving children. For years, Lydia lived in fear, believing she had been brainwashed and her spine broken repeatedly by satanic handlers.

She revealed that neuroscience saved her life, helping her to deprogram and reframe her beliefs. Her story set the stage for understanding how our brains work—and how they’re not so different from AI algorithms.

🔬 Neuroscience Principles

  1. Your Brain = An Algorithm
Like AI, the brain doesn’t give you what you want—it gives you what you focus on. Lydia explained the Reticular Activating System (RAS): the brain’s filtering mechanism that shows you only what confirms your beliefs and hides contrary evidence.
  2. The Social Media Trap
People claim they want cute puppies, but their behavior (clicking and commenting on scary spider facts) tells the algorithm to serve more fear-based content. Similarly, our brains reinforce our inner narratives—true or not.
  3. Schemas & Bias
A schema is a mental shortcut your brain uses to define “what a leader looks like” or “what success looks like.” Most of us unconsciously picture white men in suits, and AI simply reflects those dominant images back to us.

👩‍💼 Gender Bias in AI + Leadership Insights

Lydia demonstrated AI bias using Midjourney image generation prompts:

  • Prompts like “CEO,” “Leader,” and “Executive” returned only white men, often surrounded by flames or seated on red leather thrones.
  • Even prompts like “Wealthy Person” or “Successful Business Owner” avoided any representation of women or people of color.
  • Only when prompting “executive” did Midjourney offer animals like rabbits and goats—before showing a single woman.

This absurdity underscores how AI is shaped by what society has historically focused on, not what it needs.

📈 Data on Women in Leadership:

  • Companies with female CEOs see 93% higher returns.
  • Boards that are at least 20% female have a 25% higher return.
  • Yet only 10.4% of CEOs are women.
  • And women still earn only 84 cents per $1 compared to men—a figure unchanged for 20+ years.

Lydia linked these disparities directly to the biases in our brain algorithms and how AI replicates them.

🧘‍♀️ Coaching Takeaways & Centered Leadership

Lydia stressed the importance of centered leadership, emotional regulation, and human connection:

  • Neuroscience can rewire your identity and break limiting beliefs.
  • Her coaching has helped clients double their salaries, end eating disorders, and heal family rifts.
  • Effective leaders (often women) prioritize self-awareness, feedback, and community care—qualities that AI alone can’t replicate.

She called for deliberate, ethical use of AI platforms. For example:

  • She abandoned Midjourney due to its bias.
  • She now uses Adobe Firefly, which produces more diverse, inclusive imagery.

Fireside Chat with Curt Doty

Curt and Lydia transitioned to a rich conversation:

  • Curt admitted grappling with AI’s impact on creative integrity.
  • He pointed out how Midjourney ruined his “space cowboy” prompt after Studio Ghibli filter contamination, whereas Firefly better honored his intent.
  • Lydia emphasized the importance of discernment and outcome-driven creation.
  • Creatives need to maintain intentionality, taste, and values to avoid the AI-generated “sea of sameness.”

Audience Q&A Highlights

  • Q: Can women founders thrive despite anti-DEI backlash?
    • A: Yes, entrepreneurship gives women agency. Don’t lose hope—when we focus on solutions, the brain finds them.
  • Q: How can we break out of the algorithm loop?
    • A: Expose yourself to different people, environments, and cultures to challenge your schemas.
  • Q: What about AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)?
    • Curt downplayed near-term fears but warned of agentic AI and Visa giving credit cards to bots.
    • Lydia reframed AGI anxiety as existential fear. She urged people to stay present and on purpose rather than brace for apocalypse.
